The story of how Cakey by Davy came to be will absolutely warm your heart. In March 2020, Davy Tsopo was a waiter at the Brian Rum Lara Eatery in Linden, Johannesburg and he had just welcomed his first child into this world. When the first COVID lockdown was enacted a few weeks later, Davy lost his job and wasn’t sure how he was going to provide for his family.
With very few options available to him, Davy started using YouTube to learn how to bake cakes. He didn’t actually have any ingredients or an oven to work with, but he used YouTube to learn the theory. A few weeks later, Davy bought a small oven and some ingredients, and he started by making muffins which he then sold to people in his neighbourhood.
Within a few weeks, more and more people started supporting Davy, and his baking skills improved with every cake he delivered. Pretty soon, Davy was selling cakes to people from all over Johannesburg. Not only did they love the end product, but they loved his story even more, along with his humble “never-say-die” attitude.
Over the next few months, Davy’s story started to go viral and with that, different people helped Davy in different ways. For example, someone designed the Cakey by Davy logo. Another person setup an Instagram account for him. And finally, Davy made his way to our studio one day for the interview listed at the top of this page.
It’s been the most incredible journey for Davy Tsopo over the last two years and we believe he deserves every bit of credit for the path he forged. And with that said, you should know that Cakey by Davey makes delicious, custom, and homemade cakes which are available for collection the next day. Write any message you like or a name on the front!
